Where to see sea sparkle?

Sea sparkle can appear anywhere along the Dutch coast.

The best location is not fixed: a bloom can be highly localised and shift within hours. The live map therefore compares thirty coastal segments from Cadzand to Julyanadorp and shows the estimated chance and best viewing time for each beach.

Which beaches are included on the sea sparkle map?

The map follows the western Dutch coast and Zeeland estuaries. Select a coastal segment to see that beach's score; when searching from home, the site also takes travel time into account.

Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Cadzand, Breskens.

Zeeland

Vlissingen, Domburg, Westkapelle, Vrouwenpolder, Oostkapelle, Renesse.

Zuid-Hollandse delta

Ouddorp, Rockanje.

Zuid-Holland

Hoek van Holland, Kijkduin, Scheveningen Zuid, Scheveningen Noord, Wassenaar, Katwijk Zuid, Katwijk Noord, Noordwijk, Langevelderslag.

Noord-Holland

Zandvoort, Bloemendaal, IJmuiden Zuid, Wijk aan Zee, Castricum, Egmond, Bergen, Schoorl, Petten, Callantsoog, Julyanadorp.

Is a well-known hotspot always the best choice?

No. Well-known places attract more visitors and therefore more reports. The map does not use popularity as an indication of sea sparkle, but compares conditions across all thirty coastal segments.

Where should you look at the beach?

Look at the surf, a calm high-water line or a sheltered inlet. Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark and disturb a small amount of water with your foot or hand. Do not enter the water when local warnings, currents or waves make it unsafe.
